Fillers: Another Hidden Teaching Practice


As a teacher we all experience lessons which run too short and are thus confronted with a period of time that we need to fill. This situation can also occur when we place students in cooperative learning groups, and they complete their work at different times. Experienced teachers creatively and appropriately develops meaningful activities for students to do during these instructional periods. These planned instructional activities are called “fillers”. Accordingly, a teacher might say the following to a cooperative group who has completed its activity early: “That’s excellent. Now I want you to....”
